A chip that provides HD video with (720p) H.264 encode and decode, in High Profile, at 30 fps, and does so using less than 450 mW would be in great demand for the myriad of mobile devices being designed for consumers today. And so it is. The BCM2727 HD media processor supports all major video compression algorithms, including H.263, MPEG 4/2/1, and VC-1 and costs less than $15 in high volume.

Using the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile format results cutting required storage space by a quarter, versus using MPEG-2. The chip also delivers high-quality still imaging with an image signal processor capable of handling sensors up to 12 Mpixels with on-the-fly processing at 180 Mpixels/s and JPEG compression at 10 full-quality photos per second. It will also perform an audio decode using less than 10 mW and incorporates a tightly coupled 3-D graphics hardware accelerator for gaming applications.
