Tiny 1-A, 4-MHz step-down converter aims at portable apps
Features ±1% output voltage precision and 95% peak efficiency
One of the industry’s smallest 4-MHz synchronous step-down dc/dc converters, the LM3691 provides up to a 1-A output current over a 2.3 to 5.5-V input voltage range. Optimized for powering high-performance processors from a single Li-ion cell battery in mobile phones, personal media players and other mobile devices, the converter features peak efficiency of 95%, low quiescent current, and output voltage precision of ±1% for powering baseband and applications processors.
Offered in a micro SMD package, the converter features switching frequency that enables use of miniature 1-µH multilayer inductors and 4.7-µF capacitors for a footprint of less than 15 mm2 . It provides a transient performance of ±40 mV and has an integrated mode-control pin that allows selection of a forced PWM mode or auto mode, to automatically change between gated PWM mode and PWM, depending on the load. Gated PWM mode quiescent current is 63 µA under light-load conditions. ($2.25 ea/1,000 available now.)
