Compact regulators are first to support 2.5-MHz switching
Single-chip converters provide seamless switching transitions, targeting portable consumer apps
The ADP2503 and ADP2504 buck-boost regulators support switching frequencies up to 2.5 MHz. Designed to regulate voltages above and below the battery output voltage in portable electronics, the step-up/step-down dc/dc regulators incorporate a patent-pending architecture that delivers seamless mode transitions.
The switching speed allows designers to use multilayer inductors that are half the size of previous solutions. The total external component count is reduced to three, resulting in a total PCB area of less than 13 mm2 and a height of less than 1 mm. The converters are well suited for space constrained applications including wireless handsets, digital still cameras, portable audio players, and USB-powered consumer and industrial devices.
The devices feature a 38-µA no-load quiescent current in the power-save mode. The proprietary H-Bridge buck-boost architecture improves the efficiency by more than 10% compared to legacy cascaded boost-buck architectures.
The buck-boost converters operate at input voltages ranging from 2.3 to 5.5 V, meeting the requirements for single Li-ion, Li-ion polymer cell, and multiple alkaline/NiMH cell applications. Fixed output voltages range from 2.8 to 5 V. The devices are housed in 10-lead 3 x 3-mm LFCSP packages. ($1.40 ea/1,000 samples available now.)
