Low-cost handheld distance meters give high-accuracy readings
Able to measure up to 60 m, units rely on lasers rather than ultrasound
The 416D and 411D laser distance meters can measure horizontal or vertical distances to 60 and 30 m, respectively, with respective accuracies ±1.5 and ±3 mm. The shirt-pocket-sized meters are said to be far more accurate and dependable than ultrasonic devices and faster and less cumbersome than traditional tapes or wheels.
Both meters provide a bright red laser for easy measurement-point targeting, a large LCD, and a simple user interface with buttons positioned for one-hand operation. The interface lets users easily add or subtract measurements and calculate area and volume.
An automatic shut-off feature improves battery life, providing up to 3,000 (411D) or 5,000 readings (416D) from a pair of AAA batteries. The 416D also offers a memory for saving ten measurements, splash and dust protection (IP54), and audible shutdown notification.
Both meters come with an instruction book, carrying pouch to secure on a belt, two AAA batteries and a two year warranty (411D, $109; 416D $229 — available now.)
