I/O expanders handle keyboards, LEDs

The TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG I/O expander devices aid the addition of I/O peripheral ports for keypads, LEDs, and switches in mobile handsets or other portable devices. They reduce wired connections to keypad layouts ranging from 2 x 2 to 8 x 12 with up to 96 keys and eight special-function keys.

The TC35893XBG comes in a 3 x 3-mm PBGA25 package with an I2C interface, a watchdog timer, functions for managing a keypad, PWM signal generation for LED and vibrator control, and three timers. The TC35894 has a 3.5 x 3.5-mm footprint and support for up to 26 direct keys. ($1 ea/10,000 — available now.)
