High-frequency dc/dc regulator offers industry’s smallest-in-class solution
The 6-MHz buck regulator targets space-constrained portable devices
Presented as the industry’s smallest 500-mA buck regulator, the ADP2121 is the first in a family of high-frequency 6-MHz dc/dc regulators. It is available in what is said to be the industry’s smallest 1.3 × 0.9-mm wafer-level chip-scale package with a height of 0.6 mm. The device requires only two 4.7-µF (0.04 × 0.02-in.) output capacitors and one 0.47-µH inductor, resulting in a 35% reduction in PCB area compared with current 3-MHz buck regulator solutions.
This synchronous step-down converter features 92% efficiency. It automatically transitions to a low-quiescent-current power-save mode during light-load conditions, extending the operating life of battery-operated electronics.
The regulator operates at input voltages ranging from 2.3 to 5.5 V, meeting the requirements for single Li-ion, Li-ion polymer cell, and multiple alkaline/NiMH cell applications. It provides up to 500 mA continuous output current at fixed-output voltage options including 1.8, 1.82, 1.85, and 1.875 V. The device supports space-constrained applications such as camera modules, GPS modules, memory modules, or other modules used in ultrathin smart phones, digital still cameras, portable disk drives and media players.
