For years, the fundamental way engineers designed networks was using S-parameters to describe the desired linear behavior of the systems and measuring actual component parameters with a network analyzer to be certain they agree with the design. Unfortunately, nonlinear behavior, resulting from things such as signal reflection and often wreaking havoc with performance, was not covered by the technique. So another set of tools and models specifically designed to make nonlinear measurements was required, which were not only difficult to use, but often did not provide all the information needed. As a result, design was typically an arduous, iterative, hit-or-miss processes.

The combination of hardware and software that makes up the N5242A NVNA nonlinear vector network analyzer provides the critical leap in technology to go beyond linear S-parameters, letting designers for the first time efficiently and accurately analyze and design active devices under real-world operating conditions. Based on the PNA-X microwave network analyzer architecture, the instrument’s key capabilities include its abilities to measure calibrated amplitude and cross-frequency relative phase from 10 MHz to 26.5 GHz, and to extract X-parameters, which extend linear scattering parameters into the nonlinear operating region, and enable accurate portrayal of nonlinear behavior using measured data.
