CM1235/36 PicoGuard XS ESD Protection Devices

California Micro Devices is pleased to introduce the latest in ESD protection devices available from the ExtremeESD family, the CM1235 and CM1236. Each of these devices feature integrated impedance matching with enhanced ESD protection. Both devices provide eight channels of ESD protection with up to ±8kV per the IEC61000-4-2 standard, while meeting the HDMI and DisplayPort digital video requirements of 100 Ohm differential impedance matching. These devices are ideal for a number of applications including digital TV, LCD displays, notebook computers, set top boxes and Blu-Ray devices. In addition, the CM1235, which is packaged in a small 4.0mm x 1.7mm TDFN package, is suitable for portable applications such as digital still cameras, camcorders and mobile phones.

PicoGuard XS Architecture Ideal for High-Speed Data Line ESD Protection

PicoGuard XS architecture whereby inductors are integrated with the ESD protection diodes, yielding a fixed point impedance matching for high speed data lines. Traditionally, ESD protection device capacitance has been compensated for by adding external inductances (i.e., chokes) or by removing other capacitance sources such as ground power plane areas under signal traces in close proximity to the ESD device. As expected, these approaches add complexity and cost and are PCB board dependent, limiting the use of multiple board vendors. The CM1235 and CM1236 eliminate these issues by providing matched impedance without external compensation or components.

CM1235/CM1236 Features

The CM1235 and CM1236 provide protection for four pairs of differential channels, offering ESD protection to IEC61000-4-2 standard ±8kV contact discharge. The integration of inductors with the ESD diodes provides for improved ESD protection as well as outstanding signal integrity.

The CM1235 and CM1236 are part of the PicoGuard XS family of ESD protection devices which recently received the Electronics Products Product of the Year Award for its innovative design.

Another member of the PicoGuard XS family, the CM1233, received the Electronic Products magazine’s coveted “Product of the Year” award. The CM1235 offers the same impedance matching and 8kV protection as the CM1233, but in a footprint that is 70 percent smaller. The CM1236 is pin-compatible with the CM1233, but is an improved design offering even better impedance matching.

Pricing and Availability

The CM1235 and CM1236 are available in 16 lead TDFN packages. They are currently in full production and are priced at $0.47 each at 1,000 units for the CM1235, and $0.57 each at 1,000 units for the CM1236.
