Bidirectional protection device is first with OVP and OCP
Guards portable devices against electrical surge damage and other events
The NCP370 is said to be the industry’s first integrated bidirectional circuit-protection device, offering positive and negative overvoltage protection (OVP) up to ±28 V for cell phones, MP3/4, PDAs, and GPS systems, as well as overcurrent protection (OCP) for portable accessories such as FM transceivers, loudspeakers, and flash modules. The device simplifies and streamlines design in portable electronics by eliminating the need for external components to protect against electrical surge damage from wall adapters and accessories, unsuitable aftermarket ac/dc adapters, and problems caused by inverting polarity in some USB cables.
Measuring 3 x 3 x 0.55 mm, the device is available with several overvoltage thresholds to address the maximum rating of the downstream applications. Additionally, it offers a second “reverse” mode to regulate the reverse current coming from a portable device’s battery to supply the external accessories such as an FM transceiver, audio functions, or flash capabilities universally connected on the bottom connector of the portable devices.
