Freescale adds to liquid crystal display portfolio with 8-bit microcontrollers for metering and appliances

5V S08LG LCD MCUs offer exceptional price/performance, configuration flexibility and robust electromagnetic compatibility

8-bit S08LG MCU family provides cost-effective LCD support for industrial and automotive applications

AUSTIN, Texas – May 6, 2009 – Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have become essential and pervasive user interfaces for electronic products in our homes, offices, cars and factories. Adding to its growing portfolio of microcontroller solutions for LCD-based applications, Freescale Semiconductor has introduced the MC9S08LG32 microcontroller (MCU) family for industrial applications. Featuring an integrated LCD driver, the 8-bit S08LG MCUs are members of Freescale’s popular L family of 8-bit MCUs, providing cost-effective LCD control solutions for a wide range of industrial and automotive designs.

The S08LG family provides cost-effective embedded control and user interface solutions for electric metering applications, HVAC controls, digital thermostats, home appliances and exercise equipment. The S08LG devices are also ideal for a wide range of automotive body control applications, such as instrument clusters used in entry-level vehicles for emerging markets.

The 5-volt S08LG devices offer a range of flash memory sizes (up to 32 KB) and package options scaling from 48 to 80 pins. The on-chip LCD driver supports displays with up to 296 segments (8×37 or 4×41 LCD configurations). Flexible LCD module power management configuration helps reduce overall power consumption.

The highly integrated 8-bit MCUs are designed to deliver enhanced electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance through flexible pin reassignment. Simple software configuration enables any LCD pin to be assigned to the front plane (segment) or to the back plane (common). Flexible front and back plane reassignment simplifies PCB layout and makes it easy to optimize designs for robust EMI performance.

“With the introduction of the S08LG family, Freescale is addressing customer demand for 5V LCD MCUs optimized for a wide range of industrial, home appliance and medical applications,” said Aiden Mitchell, director of industrial and multi-market MCUs at Freescale. “The S08LG devices provide embedded developers 5-volt 8-bit alternatives to help drive down development cost while helping ensure quality and reliability.”

Broad portfolio of silicon solutions for LCD applications

The S08LG family is part of Freescale’s growing portfolio of 8-bit and 32-bit MCUs with on-chip LCD drivers. These highly integrated devices are designed to reduce the cost and simplify the development of a wide range of consumer, industrial and medical applications. In addition to MCUs, Freescale offers analog LED drivers for LCD backlighting applications.
