Programmable battery charger supports real-time monitoring
The SMB329 programmable switch-mode battery charger integrates instant-on, even with a dead battery, and real-time charge current monitoring. It has a programmable power-up configuration stored in nonvolatile memory, and stores in-system adjustments in volatile memory via the I2 C host interface. Additionally, the switch-mode operation and the patented TurboCharge mode enable 30% to 50% shorter charging times, while reducing wasted power by 80%. The device supports all relevant interface and safety standards, and enables universal USB charging.
The battery charger device is based on a 3-MHz switch-mode architecture, and enables up to 750-mA output from a 500-mA USB source. It operates with an input range from 3.5 to 6.2 V and withstands continuous input overvoltage to 18 V, while protecting downstream circuitry. The device is offered in a 2.3 x 2.0-mm 20-ball lead-free chip-scale package, and in a 4 x-4-mm QFN-24 package with an operating temperature range of 30 to 85C. The charger is ideal for any portable device, including mobile phones, smartphones, PDAs, portable media/MP3 players, portable GPS navigation, portable game consoles, and digital cameras/camcorders.
