MEMS sensors slash size, cost for shock, vibration monitoring

The programmable ADIS16240 iSensor intelligent impact sensor and ADIS16220 digital vibration sensor are 100 times smaller than previous, less-integrated sensor modules. At $26.58 and $53 each in thousands, respectively, the MEMS-based system-ready sensors are also one-tenth their predecssors’ cost.

Housed in a 12 x 12-mm BGA package, the 16240 consumes less than 1 mA in continuous-sampling mode with a usable bandwidth of up to 1.6 kHz. The device has a triple-axis MEMS shock/impact sensor and a recorder with an integrated programmable event-capture buffer that monitors for user-programmed shock thresholds and holds pre- and post-event data, time-stamp, temperature, and voltage. Programming features and data access are controlled from a standard SPI port.

With a ±70-g dynamic range and 100-kHz sampling rate, the 9.2 × 9.2-mm LGA 16220 combines a 22-kHz wide-bandwidth, high-g MEMS accelerometer with an embedded signal processor and data capture system for industrial applications. It captures 1,024 samples on each of three inputs, and data capture can be user-initiated, timer initiated, or event initiated. SPI-programmable features include peak sample and hold, trigger-source and threshold levels, internal filtering, and power management. (16240, $26.58 ea / 1,000 available now; 16220, $53 ea / 1,000 samples now, prod qty June.)
