NXP Expands DisplayPort Portfolio with VGA Interface Enabling Easy High Definition Video Connection
Cooperating with WPI, NXP’s DisplayPort to HDMI Solution available for Next Generation Notebook PCs
Taipei, May 28, 2009 – NXP Semiconductors, the independent semiconductor company founded by Phillips, today announced the industry’s first single-chip DisplayPort to VGA adapter IC with embedded flash, delivering a cost-effective, production-ready solution that improves the multimedia experience for mobile PC users. Based on its extensive DisplayPort portfolio, NXP and leading IC distributor, World Peace Industrial Group (WPI), also announced that NXP’s DisplayPort to HDMI technology has been selected by a major ODM for its global notebook customers, enhancing mobile high definition content. NXP will demonstrate the integrated DisplayPort to VGA solution at VIP Showroom at Taipei 101 during Computex Taipei, from 2nd June 2009.
DisplayPort is a fast growing high-bandwidth, plug-and-play digital interconnect for high-resolution digital monitors. With the introduction of DisplayPort technology, computer manufacturers can connect new DisplayPort-equipped laptop and desktop computers to existing displays. NXP provides an extensive family of DisplayPort legacy support devices, including DisplayPort to DVI and to HDMI. With the introduction of PTN3392, NXP is now expanding support of DisplayPort to the VGA market.
“DisplayPort enables consumers to enjoy easy connection for high quality video through higher transmitting bandwidth and yet smaller interface space,” said Grahame Cooney, Director of Marketing, Interface Products, NXP Semiconductors. “In direct response to customer needs, NXP designed the highly-integrated, flash-based DisplayPort to VGA adapter IC, PTN3392. With the highest integration levels, PTN3392 enables effortless connection between DisplayPort and VGA, yet frees up space for motherboard to drive down the bill of materials cost significantly.”
“WPI has always been customer-oriented,” said CJ Huang, VP of Marketing at WPI. “We recognize the demand of a flexible, cost effective and high performance DisplayPort adapter IC for the notebook industry and have experienced how NXP’s DP to HDMI solution fastened the time to market for the notebook ODMs. With the expansion of its support to VGA market, we believe NXP will bring consumers more choices for high-quality visual experiences.”
The PTN3392 integrates a DisplayPort receiver and a high-speed triple video DAC, supporting display resolutions from VGA up to WUXGA. PTN3392 greatly reduces the complexity and bill of materials needed to complete a DP to VGA adapter. PTN3392 is typically powered from the DP connector and requires no additional voltage regulators to operate: all internal voltages and power is integrated on-chip from just the DP connector’s single 3.3 V power supply. The PTN3392 supports up to two DisplayPort lanes operating at either 2.7 Gbps or 1.62 Gbps per lane, and can drive up to 1 meter of analog video cable at full performance.
Key features of PTN3392:
DisplayPort v1.1a Receiver – 1 or 2 lanes – 2.7 Gbps or 1.62 Gbps per lane
Analog video output – Triple 8-bit Digital-to-Analog – Converter (DAC) – VSYNC and HSYNC outputs – Up to 240 MHz pixel clock
Auxiliary (AUX) channel – Supports I²C over AUX – Supports MCCS, DDC-CI and DDC protocols
Monitor presence detect
Supports low power mode
Single 3.3 V power supply
Small 48-pin HVQFN package Embedded Flash for flexibility and quick and easy firmware updates. Flash will enable the part to better support the emerging interoperability standards of DisplayPort.
Because no external Flash is required the PCB design is easy and cheaper and there is less need for external components.
Power usage is reduced by using on board detection to allow the source to power down the PTN3392 when no DisplayPort source data is being transmitted. Overall power dissipation is less than 800 mW
Supports all display resolutions from VGA to WUXGA including: WUXGA, UXGA, SXGA, XGA, and VGA
