Bridge chip connects SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to SATA
Said to be the first available SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to Serial-ATA bridge IC, the MB86C30A supports the ultrafast 5-Gbit/s maximum data-transfer rate of USB 3.0, and includes an encryption/decryption engine. It provides an order of magnitude increase in data transfer rates from external storage devices to PCs.
The device includes an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) engine to protect confidential data without burdening the CPU of the host PC. The IC supports two AES modes: cipher block chaining and XTS. Both modes are ideal for hard disks, and three key lengths are supported: 128, 192, and 256 bits, with encryption and decryption processing at 300 Mbytes/s. The chip requires only 550 mW in full operation, uses 1.2 to 3.3 V, and comes in a 64-pin LQFP package. ($10 ea/sample — samples available now, prod qty 3rd qtr.)
