GbE PHY drastically cuts energy use

The XWAY PHY11G GbE PHY is offered as the first IC on the market to implement the Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) guidelines, which are based on the upcoming IEEE 802.3az standard. The PHY reduces energy use to 50 mW instead of 500 mW during periods of idle. Under full load, the chip consumes at least 25% less energy.

The IC is available in two small packages, VQFN-48 and LQFP-64, which are only 7 x 7 mm and 12 x 12 mm. The device uses a single 2.5 to 3.3-V power supply using its integrated dc/dc switching regulator. (Contact Infineon for price — samples available 4th qtr.)
