High-performance system solutions redefine digital power market

Two PowerXR system-level solutions, the XRP7704 and the XRP7740, integrate the flexibility of digital power management and control, provide the power capabilities of analog switching power supplies, and are 40% the size of competitive solutions. Both devices permit real-time power system adjustments during design or after field-deployment, and target STB, mobile netbooks, femtocells, and LCD TV applications.

High-performance system solutions redefine digital power market

The XRP7704 is a 5-A/channel regulator, and the XRP7740 is a 16-A/channel version. They are said to be the first five-channel power-system ICs to provide high-speed, proprietary digitally programmable control circuitry at the same cost as analog with additional power management features. Both devices offer a 6.5 to 20-V input voltage range, and a 0.9 to 5.0-V output range, with a built-in LDO for standby power, power-sequencing capability, and integrated gate drivers.

The digital controller ICs contain four digital PWM-controlled power supplies with an effective 12-bit resolution. The devices contain integrated gate drivers for high-current outputs and up to six GPIO pins. The Digital Power Studio program enables designers to configure the power supply’s voltage setting, current thresholds, fault monitoring and response, soft start, active shut-down timing, and channel sequencing, phase shift management, and loop response. The controller ICs use a digital proportional, integral, differential control algorithm that performs full-digital loop control at 1.5-MHz switching frequencies. (Ea/1,000: XRP7704, $4.00; XRP7740, $5.50 — samples available late October.)
