MEMS device combines linear, angular motion sensing in one package
The MEMS-based LSM320HAY30 multiaxis motion-sensor module combines a three-axis digital accelerometer and a two-axis analog gyroscope in a single device. The package-level integration of linear and angular motion sensors is said to improve performance, boost reliability, reduce size, and shrink cost, thereby opening new design possibilities for high-precision gesture and motion recognition in handheld devices, including mobile phones, game controllers, portable multimedia players, and personal navigation systems.
Robust and resistant to mechanical stress, the module provide stability of ±0.01%/°C over a −40° to 85°C as well as negligible output noise of 0.02dps/√Hz typ. The sensor offers a user-selectable full-scale acceleration range of ±2, ±4, and ±8 g as well as angular-rate detection from 30/s to 6,000/s along the pitch and yaw axes. The gyroscope element provides two separate outputs for each axis at the same time: an unamplified output for high accuracy of slow motion and a 4x amplification to detect and measure very fast gestures and movements.
The module, which has power-down and sleep modes and can operate from a 2.7 to 3.6-V supply, also provides a BIST capability that allows OEMs to verify the functioning of both sensors after assembly without having to move the board during testing.
