Synchronous dc/dc controller brings digital power control to the masses — Summit Microelectronics
High-power output and integrated digital power control functions address increasingly complex and challenging power management requirements. One innovative approach to power supply design is the SMB211 intelligent dc/dc controller with its flexibility, performance, and ease-of-use features. It features a serial digital interface, and can be easily configured during development and reprogrammed in a system by the host software. The result is a high-performance digitally controlled power supply design that is easily customizable without tedious hardware design cycles or complex microcontroller-style software coding.
The dc/dc controller combines high-performance power conversion and digital control in a single, space-saving device. The integration of advanced power control functions eliminates external components and cost, improves functionality and performance, and minimizes development time. Its nonvolatile configurable technology enables the implementation of flexible platform solutions that can be easily modified for different designs without any hardware changes.
The efficient operation combined with sophisticated power control enable complex system designs to meet Energy Star and other energy-saving standards. The controller integrates a synchronous dc/dc step-down converter with a set of digital control functions. The device’s high current-drive capability allows over 10 A of output, while using a wide variety of industry-standard MOSFETs.
The dc/dc controller can operate at four programmable frequencies (250 kHz, 500 kHz, 750 kHz, and 1 MHz), allowing optimization of efficiency and component size. Soft-start and power-on delays are also selectable to address various system requirements, especially in multi-power-supply applications. Add all these to a price of $0.66 ea/10,000 in a QFN package and you have a winning combination.
