Xeon server CPUs yield security, low power

The Intel Xeon 5600 series server processors are the first built on a 32-nm process. They support four or six cores and are said to delivers up to 60% greater performance than their 45-nm Xeon predecessors with up to 30% lower platform power.

The ICs have a 12-Mbyte L3 cache, integrated three-channel DDR3 SDRAM controller, and a QPI interprocessor bus speed of 5.9 or 6.4 GT/s. Two new security features, Advanced Encryption Standard-NI (New Instructions) and Trusted Execution Technology, enable faster encryption and decryption performance and provide a strong foundation for cloud computing. The four and six core CPUs use 40-, 60-, 80-, 95-, or 130-W TDP. ($387 to $1,663 ea/1,000 — available now.)
