Tiny antenna solution offers quick cold start
Designed for embedding into uBlox 5 GPS receiver modules, the AP.35a active patch antenna module allows 21-s cold start in open-sky conditions during tests. The 35 x 35 x 5.5-mm ceramic patch antenna has its own groundplane, allowing it to hover over the module’s mainboard for higher gain and noise resistance.
The antenna is combined with a one-stage LNA and an ultrathin coaxial cable and SAW filter to create a solution that offers frequencies to 1,575.42 ±1.023 MHz and gains of 18 ±3 dBi at 5 V, 17.5 ±3 dBi at 3 V, and 15.5 ±3 dBi at 1.8 V at 90°C. A maximum C/N ratio of 51 with 12 simultaneous locked satellites has also been recorded during tests. (Contact company for pricing and availability.)
