8-Mpixel imager shoots for smart phones

Based on proven 1.4-µm backside-illumination (BSI) pixel technology, the OV8820 1/3.2-in. 8-Mpixel RAW CMOS image sensor delivers 1080p, 30 fps and 720p, 60 fps high-definition (HD) video with electronic image stabilization (EIS) and full horizontal field of view to meet the demands of smart phone markets. The imager’s advanced video capabilities support mobile YouTube and Facebook applications.

In 8-Mpixel resolution, the chip operates at 24 fps in 4:3 format; in 6-Mpixel resolution, at 30 fps in a 16:9 format. This enables no image lag for shutterless designs, continuous shooting, and real-time image capture with no lag between resolutions. A 4-lane MIPI interface supports fast data transfer.

Designed to be used with a baseband or an application processor for integrated image signal processing, the low power imager has an on-chip VCM driver and fast mode switching between different resolutions. Other integrated features include temperature sensing, 256 bytes of one-time programmable memory, lens shading correction, and pixel defect correction. The chip fits a standard module size of 8.5 x 8.5 mm. (Contact Scott Foster for pricing — samples available now; prod qty, March 2011.)
