PMICs reduce power for PoE equipment

The Si348x family of PMICs enable reduced system cost and improved efficiency in PoE power-sourcing equipment. They complement the Si3452 PSE controllers and provide a solution for streamlining power delivery in managed and unmanaged switches and routers, iPBXs, IP-based security systems, set-top boxes, and power injectors.

The power management ICs take advantage of the real-time voltage and current-monitoring capabilities of the controller to apply active power management based on actual consumption, enhancing the use of switch ports. For compact systems of eight ports or less, it provides a pin-programmable, standalone solution that does not require an interface to an intelligent host, suiting it for unmanaged switches or other applications. The PMIC can manage up to 48 ports with as many as three power sources. (Ea/10,000: Si3480, $0.93; Si3482, $2.40; Si3480MS8-KIT, $299 ea; SmartPSE34-KIT, $379 each — available now.)
