Stepper motor drivers run at –40° to 150°C

The A3981 and A4980 microstepping motor drivers offer a single-chip solution for operation of bipolar stepper motors in full-, half-, quarter-, and sixteenth-step modes at up to 28 V and ±750 mA. The devices can be controlled by simple step and direction inputs, or through an SPI-compatible interface and operate from –40° to 150°C ambient.

The ICs run down to a load supply voltage of 3.3 V for the A4980 or 7 V on the A3981 and feature a DMOS full bridge for each phase of the motor, using synchronous rectification to improve power dissipation. Other features include an output RDS(on) of just 0.5-Ω typ source and sink, automatic current decay mode detection/selection, over/under voltage lockout, thermal shutdown, and crossover-current protection.
