Efficient APDs have low dark current and noise

Using a reach-through structure, the compact SAP500 series avalanche photodiodes (APDs) provide excellent quantum efficiency (to 65% typ), low noise (as low as 20 fA/√Hz typ), and minimal dark current (as low as 50 pA typ). Operated in Geiger mode (reverse voltage , VR > breakdown voltage, VBR ) they can detect single photons in a time-resolved manner, suiting them for applications such as LIDAR, spectroscopy, fluorescence measurements, or photon counting.

The devices have a large active area (diameter = 0.5 mm) and can also be operated in normal linear mode (VR BR ) with internal gain of 250 or higher. Available housings are: hermetic TO-46, TO-37 with thermoelectric cooler (TEC), and TO-8 with two-stage TEC. (Contact Valerie King for pricing and availability.)
