Smallest RTC with crystal saves space, battery life

Smallest RTC with crystal saves space, battery life

Claimed as the smallest combined real-time clock (RTC) die and a matched oscillator crystal for time, calendar, and alarm functions, the M41T62 measures just 3.2 x 1.5 mm. By operating at low voltages from 1.3 to 4.4 V, this device can be driven directly from a Li-ion battery and draws only 350 nA. In addition, it is claimed to help simplify product design while optimizing battery life in portable electronics.

Today’s integrated MCUs have a an on-chip RTC, but these often provide limited features and an external crystal is always required. Unlike designing with MCUs, or discretes, this integrated solution takes care of the required and sometimes troublesome matching of the crystal and the RTC.

The M41T62 produces a stable 32-kHz signal on start-up. Additional features enhancing design and system performance include oscillator failure detection, which helps the system detect power faults. Actions such as power-down time stamping, low-battery detection can be done without the additional external components needed by a microcontroller RTC.

Housed in a LCC8 leadless package, the device operates from –40° to 85°C. It is also UL certified and has a built-in reverse diode.(approx $1.50 ea/1,000 — available now)
