The APM86491 network-attached-storage SoC uses a 1.2-GHz PowerPC 465 core and is said to offer twice the performance of competing devices, with power consumption of only 2 to 4 W typ. The chip targets advanced Network Attached Storage (NAS), Wireless Access Point (WAP) and media gateway systems for the connected home market.
The IC is also said to be the first embedded processor offering two USB 3.0 ports, two PCI-Express Gen 2 ports, up to two SATA-II ports, and two 10/100/1,000 Ethernet ports on a single device. The chip has a hardware-based queue manager with traffic manager (QM/TM) and implements in-line packet acceleration technologies such as statefull TCP offload, hardware NAT, and security features. (Less than $20 each in high volume — available 3rd qtr.)
