International Battery’s HyperClass Li-ion battery systems chosen for key distributed energy storage pilot programs in the U.S. and Europe
Swedish Utility Latest to Integrate Distributed Energy Storage for Renewable Energy
ALLENTOWN, Pa – September 7, 2011 – International Battery (www.internationalbattery.com), a U.S. manufacturer and developer of large-format Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, today announced that ABB, a leader in power and automation technologies has selected International Battery’s Lithium-ion (Lithium iron phosphate) batteries as part of its overall energy storage system for the power distribution network of Swedish utility, Falbygdens Energi AB, a subsidiary of Göteborg Energi AB.
ABB’s grid-tied distributed energy storage system (DES) incorporates International Battery’s large-format Lithium Iron Phosphate HyperClass batteries that will provide storage capacity of 87 kilowatt-hours. This scalable and modular system approach provides thermal management and a comprehensive battery management system (BMS) that includes active cell balancing. The storage system will help Falbygdens Energi balance peak loads, enhance grid stability and help facilitate the integration of renewable energy for current and future smart grid applications. The DES is planned for installation in late 2011 and will be part of an existing substation in the city of Falköping enabling the storage of locally produced energy from wind turbines.
This distributed energy storage system will provide the utility and its customers many benefits, including load leveling, back-up power, support for plug-in electric car deployment as well as grid regulation/stability and improved distribution line efficiencies. As more renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, are integrated into the grid, managing and storing energy is essential due to the intermittent nature of these power sources.
“We have a significant proportion of wind power connected to the grid in this region and expect this to grow further,” said Lars Ohlsson, CEO of Falbygdens Energi. “This innovative storage solution will make it possible to store wind energy during the night when demand is low and distribute it to users during the day, allowing us to use this clean renewable energy more efficiently and minimizing the need for fossil fuel-based electricity generation. As part of this pilot, we will also study the feasibility of the stored energy to be deployed as auxiliary power for charging of electrical vehicles.”
“We are very pleased to be selected by ABB to provide the energy storage system for its distributed energy storage system,” said, International Battery’s Executive Vice President of Business Development & Sales, David McShane. “Our large-format prismatic cells provide battery systems with superior energy density that can meet the rigorous demands of DES.”
DES holds the promise of being an integral component of the smart grid future. International Battery is also working with S&C Electric Company for American Electric Power’s (AEP) Community Energy Storage (CES) system, which represents a first of its kind approach to DES.
“Distributed energy storage is a primary focus for us and our work with system integrators like ABB and S&C helps to validate that our technology is a very good fit for this application,” said McShane. “Moreover, both of these projects show how electric utilities can capture a multitude of value propositions by having the energy storage closer to the load and the end users.
