$48 module turns multimeter into Android accessory
To enable remote monitoring and data logging over distances to 10 m, the U1177A wireless connectivity solution links any of 11 handheld digital multimeters made by Agilent Technologies to smartphones, tablets, and PCs. The wireless connection, which costs $48, aims to make it safer and more convenient for engineers and technicians who must troubleshoot live machinery or work in hazardous conditions.
The core of the system is the compact U1177A Bluetooth wireless adapter, which plugs into the back of the handheld DMM. The module lets the DMM connect to an Android mobile device running either (or both) of two free Android apps: one for basic meter control and reading, and another for data logging. The mobile-meter app enables real-time interaction with connected DMMs, while the mobile-logger app simplifies data logging and remote monitoring.
There’s also a free data-logging application that runs on Windows-based PCs with Bluetooth, and up to three DMM/module pairs can be supported on one Android device or PC. All the software is downloadable from the manufacturer’s website, and the Android-based apps are also available through the Android Market. (U1177A module, $48; compatible DMMs, from $99 to $450 — available now.)
