Handcuffs shock, inject unruly prisoners

Next generation of restraining devices incorporate new technologies

BY JEFFREY BAUSCH

If you find yourself in handcuffs, you’re already in trouble. And now, if you put up a fight while wearing them, you may be in for a real shock. That’s because Scottsdale Inventions, LLC has just filed U.S. Patent Application 20120298119 for a pair of handcuffs that delivers electric shocks to prisoners vis-à-vis a Taser-like system hooked up with wireless controls and sensors.

For all its intents and purposes, this technology is actually pretty versatile

Now granted, the concept isn’t too far off that which is used in training collars for dogs. But where that particular technology employs a mild buzz to help Fido differentiate right from wrong, the amount of shock delivered through the cuffs could be enough to actually immobilize a prisoner.

That’s because the cuffs use electrodes to administer a high-voltage, low-amperage shock that disrupts an individual’s voluntary nervous system. And it’s not just through the wrists: This technology can be used as an ankle cuff, restraining belt, straightjacket, harness, facial restraint, helmet, and neck collar.

The high-tech restraining device can also be used as a warning system to control a group of prisoners. Notices range from a vibration or flashing light to audible signal or mild electric shock.

Scottsdale’s shocking handcuffs include a warning system on its front display.

Should an electric shock not be necessary at the moment, the cuffs can also release gases, liquids, and dyes, and if ever need be, inject a prisoner with sedative drugs.

Employing modern-day advancements

Scottsdale’s cuffs are programmable and respond to radio transmitters,. ensuring that prisoners stay in certain areas, avoid specific parts of the compound, or move in an orderly fashion to a different section. The cuffs can also be triggered by RFID tags attached to weapons or other items that the detainee is not allowed to be near.

The shocking handcuffs employ modern-day technology to ensure a detainee does not enter an exclusion zone.

Each one of these high-tech restraining devices comes outfitted with a bevy of additional technologies, including an accelerometer, inclinometer, and potentiometer, location-sensing device, microphone, camera, biometric sensor, and more, all as a means for allowing guards to keep close track of their prisoners and automatically deliver a warning or shock if violent / aggressive movements are detected.

Safety measures

Human rights activists concerned with some of the cuffs barbaric means for controlling prisoners may find solace in that these additional technologies also help the guards record prisoner movements, behavior, and number of shocks administered.

Additionally, they include safety cutouts to avoid the risk of an officer administering an injurious or fatal jolt.
