Offered as the world’s first single chip of its kind, the AS3935 Franklin lightning sensor IC detects lightning activity as it approaches from up to 40 km away (see http://www2.electronicproducts.com/Industry_s_first_lighting_sensor_IC_suits_low_power_portable_apps-article-hlcn07_jun2012-html.aspx). That’s much more lightning warning than ever before . The chip also detects intracloud activity as well as cloud-to-ground flashes, often enabling risk to be evaluated for approaching storms.

The IC consumes only 60 µA while operating in a low-power listening mode. In addition, the AS3935 identifies and rejects interference signals from common manmade sources such as fluorescent lighting, motors, microwave oven, and switches.
