MEMSIC: An electronic compass that keeps its heading
Electronic compass are not only common in handheld devices like smartphones, game controls, and GPSs, they are also highly desireable for industrial applications. The problem is, most of the magnetic sensors commonly used in phones today are hard-pressed to maintain any sort of accuracy, and require constant re-initialization. It’s as if the device is continually losing it’s mind.
The ultra-small MMC3316xMT three-axis magnetic sensor is not like the others: Based on anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) MEMS technology, it is a ±16 Gauss FS device that provides the industry’s highest accuracy as well as sensing range. The device, which is housed in a LGA package that measures a mere 2 x 2 x 1 mm, can be placed on a portable device’s circuit board without fear of major magnetic interference. And able to operate from broad-voltage-range supplies, the sensor consumes just 0.1 mA at a 7-sample/s data rate. Best of all, this performance comes at a very affordable price: $0.84 each in lots of 100,000.
