SSL LED driver addresses cost, lifetime issues in nondimmable residential bulbs

Addressing cost and lifetime issues in price-sensitive retrofit bulbs, the iW3626 SSL LED driver enables up to 20% BOM cost savings. The device is a single-stage driver with output power up to 10 to 60-W equivalent, nondimmable LED bulbs.

The device is claimed by the company as the first to offer an on-chip, user-configurable power factor correction (PFC) to manage the trade-off between PFC and output current ripple. Additionally, an internal, configurable overtemperature protection (OTP) and derating function enables a predictable and reliable bulb operating life.

The patent-pending, user-configurable PFC feature allows designers to configure the PF strength from 0.7 to greater 0.9, enabling them to meet the various global mandates, while effectively managing the trade-off between power factor and output ripple. This part allows for FETs to be replaced with lower-cost BJTs — eliminating the need for high-voltage electrolytic capacitors. Additionally with its patented PrimAccurate primary-side control it eliminates the need for a secondary-side regulator and optical feedback isolator. Housed in a 6-lead SOT23 package, the iW3626 meets global standards, including European Union IEC61000-3-2 requirements. ($0.35 ea/1,000 — samples, now.)
