How to Set-up a MPU-32 DeviceNet

A motor protection unit that is perfect for upgrades and retrofits

Littelfuse provides an in-depth tech report to teach users how to setup the MPU-32 DeviceNet. The report covers all MPU-32 DeviceNet message definitions, MPU-32 DeviceNet communication settings, and as well RSNetWorx.

MPU-32 Motor Protection unit

In case you're not familiar, the MPU-32 is a currentand temperature-based protection, meter, and data logging motor protection unit for your three-phase low voltage medium-horsepower induction motor. The device is an excellent choice for retrofitting or upgrading aging and obsolete motor protection using existing CTs.

The MPU-32 sustains both Polled I/O as well as Explicit messages, and can even support both simultaneously. Polled I/O's are used by DeviceNet scanners to access fixed blocks of memory at a sustained rate. Explicit messages are used by RSNetWorx, or other configuration software, to set up the device. Incidentally, Explicit messages are also used by PLC's MSG instructions to access parameters.

To access the communication settings, look under Setup, Hardware, and then the Network Comms menu using the operator interface. From there, set the Network ID for the device and the Baud Rate as DN 125K, DN 250K, or DN 500k. Finally select DeviceNet from the Network menu.

Once the RSNetWorx has been started the first step is to register the MPU-32 EDS file, only afterwards can the MPU-32 be added to the network configuration. After the device is configured, the Parameter tab can be accessed. From here a listing of all the MPU-32 parameters is displayed. All can be altered with the exception of the Polled Consumption (Parameter 10), and Polled Production (Parameter 11).
