The Reality of Smell-O-Vision

The screen that could change advertising ads

smell o vision

Remember, in the 1900s, when movies often created scenes with inventions such as a television in which the audience can smell what was displayed?  Well, in Japan, Haruka Matsukara and his team from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology have finally made the “smell-o-vision” a reality.  The screen, unveiled at the IEEE Virtual Reality 2013 conference in Orlando, Florida, has the capability to produce aromas.  The screen has built-in fans situated at the corners to help create the illusion that the aroma comes from the display.  Before the aroma reaches the viewer, the airflows merge together increasing the illusion of the screen’s aroma rather than emerging from fans.  By readjusting the fans, the aroma can be emitted from different areas of the screen, giving the users a chance to smell different objects on different parts of the screens.  It also helps the user to identify the aroma and not the air steams.  Although currently there is no market for this creation, Matsukara is strongly considering advertising and museum opportunities rather than personal use of the product.
