Squishy light bulb offers genius solution to long-standing problem

Designer comes up with solution to durability issue

Not too long ago, design company “Booo,” located in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, set its creative minds on developing a sustainable, all-in-one light bulb / lampshade. To help with the project, the group enlisted the talents of several outside designers, including the very distinguished Nacho Carbonell.

Rather than try to come up with an entirely new design for the light bulb as we know it, which a lot of companies are doing nowadays, Carbonell took a look at solving one of the technology’s fundamental problems — durability. Since most light bulbs are made of glass, they can’t really withstand any sort of physical trauma without it resulting in the bulb itself being rendered useless.

Carbonell’s solution was to surround an LED bulb with a soft plastic dome. Doing this not only protected the LED, it’s also exactly in accordance with Booo Labs prerequisite for developing an all-in-one bulb / shade solution.

The lampshade can be squished and molded without ever damaging the interior electrical components. In terms of the Booo-Nacho bulb’s tech specs, they’re as follows:
• 220-240 volts
• 8 watts
• 27,000 Kelvin (warm white)
• 650 lumens
• Yes, the bulb is dimmable
• Rubber size: ø185 x H 240 mm

Story behind the Booo-Nacho bulb below:

Carbonell’s bulb retails for €89.95 ($116.01) on the Booo website.
