Image of the Day: Partially blind 98-year-old man creates digital artwork on Windows 95

Some people can barely get their elderly grandparents to look at a computer, but one 98-year-old man spends 10 hours a day painting on his Windows 95 computer using a simple Microsoft Paint program.

Not only is Hal Lasko 98 years old, but he’s also visually impaired due to a condition called wet macular degeneration, which causes blindness in the center of vision. Lasko (nicknamed “Grandpa” and “The Pixel Painter”) has a creative background. He served in WWII drafting directional and weather maps for bombing raids and after the war became a typographer.

“When I lost my eyesight I thought my painting days were over,” said Lasko in a Vimeo interview.

But his family thought of a solution. About 15 years ago they bought him a computer and taught him how to use the Microsoft Paint program. Ever since, Grandpa has been hooked.

Lasko's newest painting called “The Space Highway.”

He likes to use the computer because it magnifies the screen so his eyesight is somewhat good enough for painting. Although, Lasko says, these days he can do most of his painting with his eyes closed.

His pixel paintings are available for sale on his website for $98 in honor of his 98th birthday that just passed on July 28th.
