The Samjiyon is a tablet manufactured and released only in North Korea. Not much was known about this $200 device until recently, when a tourist – who only identified himself as “Michael” – posted a video of the tablet’s unboxing to Northkoreatech.org, which subsequently uploaded the clip to YouTube.
According to the box’s specs, the 7-inch, Android-running Sajiyon includes a 1.2 GHz processor, which makes it nearly as fast as the latest version of the iPad (it has a 1.4GHz processor), and faster than both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and iPad2 devices.
Speculation over the device’s true specs aside, what’s particularly noteworthy about the device is the fact that it includes a built-in antenna so as to allow the user to watch live, non-streaming television.
When not in use, the attached gadgetry folds up inside the tablet.
The antenna and the app that hosts the live programming are both pre-set to TV frequencies in Pyongyang, which means the technologies are useless outside the country.
Sticking with the theme of uselessness, the Samjiyon won’t connect to Wi-Fi outside North Korea. When online, it will only connect to state-sanctioned websites.
But hey, it has an antenna!
