What is the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy?
SOFIA is a collaborative project between NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to construct and maintain an airborne observatory. NASA developed the aircraft and operates the observatory. SOFIA's telescope was employed for the first time on May 26, 2010. Learn more about SOFIA.
