You read that headline right — McDonald’s has launched a new in-restaurant play area for the modern-day, tech-savvy child. It’s called the “Happy Table,” and it’s an NFC-enabled table that allows children to use a mobile device to play a game on its surface.
A phone gets paired to the table simply by tapping it. From there, the child can pick from a collection of games that require moving the device all along the table’s surface.
For instance, one game requires the child to drive a car around the table. Moving the phone along the surface, while twisting and turning it, controls the vehicle, and the goal is for the child to stay on the road.
Those that score a good time could be rewarded with a chance of winning an apple pie.
Other games include helping Ronald McDonald fight bad guys, whack-a-mole, and sinking battleships.
Being a major corporation, McDonald’s has , of course, an end goal, and that is to drive mobile engagement (and thereby the collection of data), within the fast food restaurant. From a marketing standpoint, the new technology is being positioned as a way to keep kids occupied and entertained during their time there.
For now, the Happy Table is only available in Yishun, Singapore. McDonald’s intends to launch it throughout all of Asia in the coming months. For further understanding into the technology, check out the restaurant’s promotional video below:
