Compact, foldable 3D printer can fit inside a backpack or suitcase

Resin-based printer allows for production on the road

The LumiFold is a resin-based 3D printer that can fold up and be easily transported via backpack or briefcase.

In terms of specs, the device measures 250 x 120 x 30 mm when folded up. When in production mode, it uses a building area of just 90 x 90 x 90 mm.

The concept for the LumiFold was born from a request put to the company to design a small, cheap, easy-to-use, and portable 3D printer for printing dental molds. Months of design followed, followed by even more time spent building — and re-building — prototypes.

The final result was the model you see here.

The device fuses liquid resin into solid form. It gets placed under a projector and includes within it an integrated UV sensor that measures the precise UV level of said projector’s light. This not only makes the LumiFold compatible with any projector on the market, it frees the user from having to experiment with different UV levels, which, when it comes to DLP printers, typically results in the waste of resin.

In terms of being able to see the design, the printer uses 3D holographic visualization. Referred to as the “HoloDock,” it provides a hologram of the design to give the user an impression of a real 3D volumetric image of the object being printed.

The HoloDock can be used in conjunction with the LumiFold or by itself to help visualize the item being designed. It’s compatible with any PC or iOS device with the app that is provided.

As for power, the LumiFold uses approximately 5 W when in production, and if there’s no socket available, it can draw its energy from its lithium battery.

The LumiFold is on Indiegogo right now, where it has already surpassed its goals of $1,500.

The pint-sized printer now has over a month remaining to secure additional funding.
