Samsung launches new curved display

Step toward more flexible smartphones and mobile devices

Samsung Electronics will be releasing a smartphone model featuring a curved display next month, a brilliant new design sure to lead to new and exciting advances in the field of technology. The global smartphone leader, which took the lead from Apple Inc. last year, will be launching the new phone exclusively in South Korea this October in order to test consumer reaction. Unfortunately, it seems Samsung is keeping all of the specifics about the new device under wraps until the launch, though the phone is possibly a version of the Note 3.

Samsung debuted prototypes of the curved display in January, with more flexible screens and displays that extended outward from the device’s sides. While the electronics goliath has already launched large-screen curved televisions, which provided several advantages over traditional flat screens such as more pixels and a “panorama effect” that provides a more intense viewing experience likened to an IMAX Theater, the new small-screen handheld device is a giant technological leap forward — one that has been anticipated by technology enthusiasts for years.

Technology analysts are hoping the release of the new mobile model will be another step toward engineering more user-friendly devices that could be folded and bent outside the traditional smartphone mold. The curved display makes user-interface simpler than ever without being a radical change, giving users a new experience that certainly helps boost Samsung’s spot as the most dominant smartphone manufacturer.
The screen will be made of plastic, much more flexible and much harder to damage than traditional glass displays, and will be easier to navigate than older designs. It will be set with OLED panels, allowing for higher resolution, higher contrast ratios, and a better-quality display. It is certainly a step forward toward creating new mobile devices that push technological boundaries.

But while the new design is certainly advantageous to both users and technological innovation, it is sure to be pricey. Critics are doubtful that Samsung will be reliably able to mass-produce the model. The phone’s advances make it costly to manufacture and even harder to sell, and it is likely that the phone will only be available in a small volume for a very high price.

Also, the design does have its drawbacks. While like their other products, Samsung’s new smartphone is also designed to weather the elements and challenges of daily life, the curved nature of the design makes it less resistant to moisture than a traditional smartphone, a problem Samsung’s engineers are still working to resolve. The determined company might also face complications with further curved models due to components in the devices that cannot bend, such as the battery.

Nevertheless, technology enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the phone’s release, though there is no information about whether it will be available outside of Korea. Since Samsung officials are not releasing further details about the design, all will be eagerly awaiting the launch next month to see if the phone lives up to its hype.
