When we think of a vehicle, Sanjay Dastoor says we tend to think of a car. During his February 2013 TED Talk, though, he said the future of energy-efficient vehicles needs to be looked at through a different perspective. This new way of thinking is based on the fact that he and his team invented a device that charges off a wall outlet in 15 minutes, can go anywhere in a six-mile span, avoids large amounts of traffic, and does not require gas.
Oh, and it looks like a skateboard!
Boosted Boards of Palo Alto, California is a new company lead by Dastoor and their product is guaranteed to bring passengers up the steepest hills of San Francisco and even reach up to 20 miles per hour. During his talk, Dastoor pulls a small battery out of his pocket from a toy store remote control airplane and points out how this tiny power source is all that’s need to power the electric skateboard.
The inspiration for the Boosted Board stemmed from the friendship between Sanjay Dastoor, John Ulmen, and Matthew Tran who were looking for a more efficient way to get around the grounds of their campus, Stanford University. The relative simplicity of its design — the user gets a hand held remote that can control the direction, acceleration, and brakes of the electric skateboard — has a lot of people thinking differently about the future of transportation.
