Elon Musk and his crew of SpaceX researchers have put together a computer program that is quite literally taken from the movies—it’s a 3D modeling program that can be controlled using only one’s hands, and it’s inspired by the program that Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark uses in the Iron Man movies.
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark using a 3D modeling program, and below, Elon Musk demonstrates a real-life version of the technology.
The 3D modeling setup was created using code to bridge the gaps between a Leap Motion controller and various other technologies, including the Oculus Rift VR headset, 3D projector, and more.
In the following video, Musk demonstrates how he can move around a 3D model of a rocket component, zooming in and out on the wire frame, lifting up, down, left, right, and spinning it all around with the utmost ease. While doing all of this, he points out how he can inspect specific parts of the model without ever having to lay his hands on the computer’s mouse or keyboard.
Make sure you watch the video through to the end, where Musk demonstrates sending the model he was working on to the 3D printer for production.
