Here's a quick follow-up to my blog from earlier this month on the CEC's proposed voluntary LED lamp spec. The main purpose of the spec is to provide performance requirements for any future utility rebate programs. (See: Rebates for Consumer-Friendly LED Light Bulbs Coming Our Way?)
Materials from the October 11th workshop were recently posted. These include: the agenda, public comments, and a copy of the proposed spec. Also included is a slide presentation by Dr. Lorne Whitehead of the University of British Columbia which focuses primary on the color rendering index (CRI) specification. In the presentation, Dr. Whitehead specifically addresses the claim that increased CRI will require greater energy and increase costs, arguing that better CRI lowers the need for lumens, thereby actually reducing power requirements.
Other issues discussed at the workshop included a comparison of the ENERGY STAR® and CEC specs, an overview from the California Utility Commission on using their upstream* programs, and comments from both industry and the utilities.
