At the heart of any in-car entertainment system is the main audio and radio board, complemented by various media playing and display options. Drawing on its proven technology, NXP Semiconductors leads the way in this area with its best-in-class tuner and DSP silicon solutions.
Reception and radio / audio processing
Tuner
As the successor of the digital 10.7MHz IF tuners, the TEF7000 is a digital low-IF car radio front-end that allows higher integration of critical RF functionality, reduces design complexity, lowers system costs and cuts board space requirements. Our front-end tuner solutions offer many benefits including best-in-class radio reception, embedded IF signal processing and they are fully HD Radio and DRM compatible. Designed to complement the digital-IF DSP back-end SAF7741/ SAF7746, this IC enables an optimum partitioning of functions and signal interfacing.
Radio / audio processing
The signal processing engine in today’s car radio units is often a dedicated car radio and audio DSP from NXP. Our unique digital low-IF DSP SAF7741/SAF7746 solution replaces fixed hardware design blocks with fully flexible DSP solutions. They give designers highly integrated, powerful and economical solutions that offer system and design flexibility, with extensive functionality and the most advanced radio and audio processing algorithms.
All the devices in the family also feature fully integrated IF processing, significantly reducing external filter circuitry and analog /digital audio interfaces. A number of design changes have been implemented to further improve the robustness, such as intelligent power management and clocking, as well as various ESD improvements. In addition, an improved grounding strategy results in less bounce, better EMC and enhanced overall performance. It is optimized for digital radio reception with an external co-processor (e.g. SAF356x) and significantly reduces system costs due to small quantities of external components.
Driving a range of loads
As an industry leader, NXP offers an audio amplifier portfolio that reflects our advanced understanding of the technology. That includes ultra efficient Class-D amplifiers, based on our own advanced silicon on isolator processes, and the industry’s first high volume IPAS (Integrated Power Amplifier and Stabilizer).
Class-AB amplifiers
In Class-AB audio amplification, our range includes quad amplifiers from25W – 28W (e.g.TDF854x), diagnostics by I²C-bus, high sound performance by low POP noise and low harmonics out of band. In addition, NXP offers lower power dissipation (17% less than high efficiency mode) by best efficiency mode. Try the IPAS3- family (TDF855x) quad amplifier combination with vregs for easy layout and one heat sink application.
Class-D amplifiers
Since Class-D power amplifiers improve sound performance to consumers and they are increasingly important for everyone inside the car. Our Class-D solutions support stereo amplifiers up to 145 Watt (TDF8599CTH), including diagnostics by I²C-Bbus, HW thermal fold back, new 6V capabilities (TDF8597) with several versions, including TDF8599xTH (8-24V, 35V, 48V). NXP’s portfolio also includes the quad 26W Class-D amplifier (6V-24V) with diagnostic (TDF8530) for less heat consumption.
Antenna amplifier
NXP MMIC components allow building antenna amplifiers, which can be located extremely close to the antenna to minimize transmission line losses. Manufactured in NXP’s latest SiGe technology, devices such as the low-noise, high-gain RF MMIC BGU7003 deliver high-quality reception, and offer higher integration and easier design-in than discrete bipolar transistors.
Driving Displays
To visualize =the required information about entertainment systems, NXP offers a broad portfolio of LCD display drivers (PCA85xx) with enhanced temperature range, specifically designed for use with Vertical Alignment (VA) displays, a display technology widely used in clusters.
To drive the numerous LEDs, NXP offers a whole range of products so you can find the perfect match to your design.. Starting from a simple current source (PSSI2021SAY), NXP also has several logic devices and complex LED controllers (PCA96xx) with integrated PWM channels, completing the high-end portfolio. These LED controllers integrate several high resolution PWM channels, allowing for color mixing and global dimming of tell tales and backlights in car radio clusters.
In-vehicle communication
Besides offering all the networking protocols relevant for car entertainment, NXP has highly integrated in-vehicle networking products such as our system basis chip (SBC) families, combining one or several bus transceivers, voltage regulators, I/O pins and, optionally, the functionality of a watchdog in a single IC. The combination of these integrated functions offers advanced low-power mode control. These pin-compatible family devices with different transceiver options support scalable platforms by simply changing the population of the printed circuit board.
I/O protection
Specifically designed to protect automotive networks, NXP offers a series of ESD protection devices out of the PESD family. The MMBZ series offer single-line bidirectional or dual-line unidirectional transient overvoltage protection in a small SOT23 package. Surge protection up to 600W is assured by the Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) product family. In addition, NXP’slow ohmic Power MOSFET devices in advanced TrenchMOS technology or PMEG Schottky devices allow robust reverse polarity protection solutions.
Glue logic
Beside standard logic functionality with different supply voltage ranges and speed in innovative packages, NXP offers dedicated devices, such as low Ohmic analog switches (NX3L series), flip flop devices to debounce switches, analog and digital multiplexers, and I/O expansion devices to strive for cost optimized car radio solutions.
