In response to the ongoing leakage issues that Tokyo Electric Power Company is dealing with at its Fukushima nuclear plant, manufacturer Yamamoto Corporation has launched a line of anti-radiation underwear made from a lead-based fabric to protect a wearer’s more sensitive areas from harmful gamma rays.
The undergarment is estimated to weigh 7.5 pounds, and will be priced at about $825 when it goes on sale.
For those curious, its protection is specifically directed at the wearer’s spine and lower abdomen areas.
The company also plans on offering a wet-suit–style garment.
The suit is said to be capable of blocking close to 100% of beta rays. It weighs 6.6 pounds and will be priced at $1,073 when it goes on sale in late November.
Neither item is expected to be made available at the local Target store. Rather, these clothes were created for the workers on land and in the water who are trying to contain the various leaks at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which was badly damaged following an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. They are to be worn in addition to conventional radiation suits for added protection.
