Gaga’s wearable flying apparatus

At Lady Gaga’s  Artpop premiere party, artRave, she debuted more than just music. For the album’s launch shindig in New York City, Gaga wore a hexacopter flying dress that was reminiscent of a sci-fi movie-esque flying drone. She stated that her dress, the Volantis, is a vehicular metaphor for the message of her album. Gaga can include this ensemble to her tech-fashion wardrobe that already includes a shirt that spews out sparks. This dress is the first of its kind to ever be invented, and truly takes wearable technology to the next level.

The six booms positioned on the dress were stationed in a hex formation. The booms were then attached to the platform that contained the bodice constructed from fiberglass. Two electrical motors were placed at the end of each boom, allowing power to flow to the customized carbon fiber propeller blades. The propellers on top catapult the unit upwards up to 70 inches in the air, resembling a hovercraft or UFO.

For safety precautions, Gaga sported a helmet during the demonstration.

It is interesting that the apparel was controlled externally by a technician. The dress was manipulated by a series of radio signals transmitted from the skilled technician who stood in the sidelines of the presentation.

The 50-volt battery powered garb was in the works for two years prior to its on-stage debut. Through the stages of development, Gaga worked closely with the fashion technology company, Studio XO, that created innovative designs for her past tours.

This tech-dress is a precursor to Gaga’s space-performance plans set for 2015.
