Sick of paying to talk to relatives in China? Go get this app

New Chinese mobile app competes with social messaging services

In an age filled with so much surprising and innovative technology, one of the great annoyances of the day can be having to pay for an international call, because there is no longer a real reason why it should cost so very much more than any other phone call or message. If your relatives or friends happen to reside in China, then you are in luck—China Mobile International has just launched a mobile app to help users communicate with others in China without the usual cost for such things. While the company did previously release a prototype version of this app in June, its new updated version is better equipped to handle user demand and needs.

With more than 700 million subscribers, China Mobile reigns as the world’s largest mobile operator, though it is still mostly based in China. Its new app, Jego, hopes to gain the company international clients by allowing anybody outside of China to receive free incoming calls on a China mobile number, or on a rented number if they don’t have one for China mobile. As long as users have an Android or iOS device and a data connection, they will be able to receive these calls, as well as make vastly cheaper international calls using the app.

According to China Mobile International CTO John Jiang, users can also use the app to send text messages, make voice and video calls, and send pictures for free, allowing the users to communicate as though they were in China. The network desires to tie a mobile number to an app rather than a SIM card.

The app seems to be China Mobile’s way of competing with social messaging apps and services such as Microsoft’s Skype, or LINE and WeChat, that offer voice and messaging services over 3G data connections or the Internet. Like most mobile operators, these services have taken a large number of users away from China Mobile. But this app is certainly expected to drive business back up.
