Research conducted by IHS iSuppli Research indicates that after the 2.5% decline in the global semiconductor market in 2012, it has regained its footing with revenue set to expand by about 5% because of the strong performance of the memory sector. By the end of 2013, global semiconductor sales are expected to reach $317.9 billion, up 4.9% from $302.9 billion in 2012. This is mainly due to the dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and NAND flash memory markets, which are expected to rise by 35% and 27.7%, respectively.
Other research conducted by the firm shows that semiconductor revenue for major home appliances will reach an estimated $2.6 billion by the end of the year. The market is expected to grow more than 12% this year, and semiconductor revenue for this market will be worth $3.8 billion by 2017.
