President Obama: I’m not allowed to have an iPhone

Security issues keep President from owning most popular device on the market

When you’re the most powerful man in the free world, one would think you’d have access to any piece of technology your heart desires. But alas, that is not the case when it comes to U.S. President Barack Obama and his cell phone.

While speaking with a group of young people at the White House for an event promoting his health care law, the President admitted that he’s not allowed to own the world’s most popular device. “I'm not allowed for security reasons to have an iPhone,” he said.

He went on to explain that while his daughters Sasha and Malia spend a lot of their time on their iPhones, he is often seen with his bulky Blackberry because of its strong security; the very reason why the device, despite its steep decline in popularity on the consumer market, is still so popular in Washington.

Obama and his Blackberry

Shortly after his inauguration, the President won a battle with the Secret Service to keep his Blackberry, despite the branch’s concerns over it being hacked, giving away his location, and worries over anything that he might write or save to it eventually being used against him during congressional investigations.

He has since made several comments about how frustrated he is when it comes to the White House “bubble” and how it’s too difficult to communicate with normal people or get information from the outside world without it first being filtered for him by aides or the press.

The Blackberry, according to his aides, is his way of escaping that confinement.
